Manser enters Berg Marathon

Cape Town - Intrepid adventurer Riaan Manser will take part in the 50th Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon taking place from July 12-16, 2011.

Manser who is currently on his Around Iceland on Inspiration expedition with Dan Skinstad, will be breaking this expedition in order to participate in South Africa’s most gruelling paddling race which takes place between Paarl and Veldrift.

Taking on two challenging adventures, one within the other is arguably a first for a South African. But nothing less can be expected from Riaan Manser. As the official Windhoek Lager brand ambassador, Windhoek is bringing Riaan back to South Africa from Iceland days before the race so that he can fulfil his desire to take part in the 50th Windhoek Berg. There will be no time for rest afterwards as he will fly back immediately to continue his Icelandic expedition.

Mark von Bentheim, marketing manager of the Windhoek trademark in South Africa says:  “We are happy that Riaan has decided to participate in this year’s marathon as it shows his true nature and dedication to what he believes in.”

Riaan and Dan left Cape Town on March 16, 2011 to embark on the Around Iceland on Inspiration journey which will see them conquer the entire coastline of 4 800km on a kayak without aid, circumnavigating the entire island. The duo has experienced some setbacks on their journey thus far with bad weather and a volcano eruption causing severe delays to the overall expedition.

“I’m very excited about this year’s race. To break our Iceland expedition to compete in this year’s Berg River Canoe Marathon is going to be tough, but I am not shy of a challenge. The Berg is a real adventure and look forward to being a part of it,” says Manser.

Participants and spectators in this year’s 50th Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon can look forward to some exciting new elements which will make the legendary event even bigger and more exciting.

There is also an improved finish at a new site in Port Owen, Veldrift, where prize giving and the “Banks of the Berg” celebration will be held. Other developments include registration taking place in Cape Town and at the time trials, improved facilities at overnight stops and other daily operational improvements.

The most significant of new developments for 2011 is that the team competition will receive a boost in prize money and for the first time both the men and women categories will receive equal prize money.

“This year marks an important milestone for the Berg River Canoe Marathon and we are pleased that Riaan will be joining us for the historic race. We are honoured to be able to provide this platform for him to be true to himself as an adventurer and are inspired by the conviction he has to successfully partake in this gruelling race in the middle of what is already a tough expedition,” concludes Von Bentheim.
