Highlander entries on the up

Howick - The sixteenth edition of the Sappi Howick Highlander adventure weekend has seen a flurry of entries stream in over the final few days leading up to the eagerly anticipated trail running and mountain biking event.

The steadily increasing influx of entries for this year’s event has left the organisers feeling justified in their view that there is a desperate need for more family orientated, affordable events within the industry as currently the majority cater primarily for athletes at the top end of the spectrum.

“Things have picked up over the weekend and the flow of entries is going nicely,” said event coordinator Alan Miller. “We are pleased with the number of entries we have received thus far and we anticipate a whole host more to come through prior to the event this weekend.”

“Things are really starting to take off and I’m confident that by the time things get underway on the weekend we’ll have a really good size field again this year,” he added.

With this year’s event is focusing on creating an opportunity for the entire family to enjoy the outdoors together in an as affordable manner as possible organisers have gone out of their way to remove unnecessary frills without compromising participants’ overall experience.

“We’ve felt the industry has needed something like this for some time and it is great to see there are others out there that share a similar stance on the matter and have given us their support,” said Miller.

“We feel that there very few events the average family can afford to take part in due to exorbitant costs and, considering the number of entries we have received thus far, I think it’s pretty safe to say that there are others who feel the same way,” he added.

Those still wanting to get their entry in can take advantage of an early entry discount of R10.00 per entry, except for the 2km kiddies ride, by entering online at www.howickhighlander.co.za or entries can be submitted at the event on the day.

The trail runs take place on Saturday 27 August whilst the mountain bike rides get underway on Sunday 28 August. With a wide variety of distances available and all routes being very manageable, the untimed event offers every member of the family something to suit their needs.
