Banff festival returns to SA

Cape Town - Cape Union Mart has announced the launch date for the local leg of the international mountain culture film festival, Banff Mountain Film World Tour 2011.

The Banff Mountain Film World Tour will showcase the efforts and talents of the finest mountain filmmakers and kicks off in South Africa on October 28, 2011. The festival is co-hosted by outdoor brands Deuter, LED Lenser, Buff and K-Way.

Every year the Banff centre in Canada receives hundreds of entries from extreme sports filmmakers, which are narrowed down until only the best films remain. This year’s adrenalin filled mountain line-up includes The Longest Way, Tuzgle, Life Cycles, Eastern Rides, Cross Country Snowboarding, Into Darkness, Second Nature, Dream Result and The Swiss Machine.

The Banff Centre began an outreach programme in 1986 to introduce these thrill seeking films to communities across the world, and thus the Banff Mountain Film World Tour was born.

Twenty years later in 2006, Cape Union Mart brought the Banff Mountain Film World Tour to Cape Town and in 2007 the film festival expanded to Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The tour takes viewers on an adrenalin-filled journey that includes extreme mountain climbing, base jumping, alpine skiing, kayaking, mountain expeditions, remote cultures and the world’s last great places - all brought to life on the big screen. The tour is massively popular, and is almost always a sell-out.

The public can view the films at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country, screening once daily from October 28 to November 3. This single screening normally takes place at approximately 20:00. The screening includes all nine short films, with an estimated duration of two hours.

Bookings can be made through Ticketline on 082 16789 and electronically at www.sterkinekor.co.za. Bookings open at the beginning of October 2011. For more information and to watch the trailer, check out www.banff.co.za.

Banff will be screened at four Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country:

Cavendish Square, Cape Town
Tygervalley Centre, Cape Town
Sandton City, Johannesburg
Brooklyn Mall, Pretoria
