Good day the analyst,
I am not certain you saw the same game I did. I recorded all the open play kicking. Let’s just say that our current kicking game does not work. The AB’S kicked slightly more but were far more effective.
MYTH MAKING
The open play kicking (non – penalties) was of poor execution. I will happily share the stats. The overwhelming incompetent was Ruan Pienaar which was rightly picked up by the New Zealand commentators. The 1s half try conceded was caused by one of his typically wayward kicks. He somewhat redeemed himself by surprisingly passing the ball to Habana for his brilliant individual try. In view of this my opinion is that he was our third worst player of the day, marginally less incompetent than Dean Greyling and Morne Steyn.
AXIS OF INCOMPETENCE
The back line farce is at 9, 10 and 12. Morne Steyn is arguably a good and conservatively competent number 10 in the Bok tradition. However, he is clearly out of form and, more significantly, has no confidence. Only a dogmatic, irrational coach would put a shattered man through this. Frans Steyn is a crasher kicker, whatever creativity he had has been knocked out of him. I can only see him at full back. He will certainly execute the “brilliant” kicking game from the back far better than anyone else. It is absurd that you would score Jean De Villiers lower than F Steyn. How could he show anything with the 10 and 12 that he had?
BRILLIANT FORWARDS
I think your scoring of the forwards is cynically begrudging. We had two teams out there. A forward pack that murdered th AB’S.; and a back line that committed suicide with quality ball. Why did you think Richie M. had a quiet game? Francoise Louw did a great number on him. Strauss was fantastic. We have lots of excellent hookers in the Bok set up.
KEY PLAYER SCORES
Jean De Villiers: 5
Frans Steyn: 3 he is not an inside centre
Bryan Habana: 7 the extra point for the moment of genius
Ruan Pienaar: 3 the extra point for passing the ball to Bryan
Morne Steyn: 1 for the penalty and the odd pass. Let the man rest. Bring in Elton Jaantjies as cover for Goosen
Strauss: 8 our joint best player
Louw: 8
DROPPED PLAYERS
Frans Steyn rest rest rest
Ruan Pienaar what a disaster Vermaak perhaps we need a scrum half
Zane Kirchner: to be replaced by Frans Steyn
NEW BLOOD
Juan De Jongh in for Frans Steyn
What do you say then?
A FOREIGN COACH
Let’s face it, most of the previous Bok coaches have suffered the myopia of narrow provincialism / nationalist bias and political maelstrom. Give a foreign coach a carte blanche. I am not naïve I know it will never happen.
What say you then?
