SA fans cheer on Impey

Cape Town - Local cycling fans have put their support behind fourth-placed SA cyclist Daryl Impey at the Tour de France.

Top 10 Tour de France crashes

Impey finished eighth in Sunday's Stage 2 156km ride across Corsica from Bastia to Ajaccio, putting him fourth on the overall classification.

In doing so Impey, reached the highest ever position in the overall standings by a South African.

If Impey makes it into the yellow jersey after today's Stage 3, he would be the first South African ever to don yellow at the Tour de France.

Although Robbie Hunter has won a stage before (the 11th stage of the 2007 Tour de France), no South African has ever held the overall lead in the competition.

Here's what Sport24 readers had to say about Impey's performance:

"Go Daryl - just hope no dope." -  Hendrik Schutte

"Keep Mzansi flag high." - Johannes Masego

"Proudly South African, well done Daryl, great start." - Graeme Hutchins

"Wow nicely done Impey!!! In theory he could wear the MJ tomorrow night!" - Vuurwarm Tannie

"Congratulations, great ride Daryl." - Anthony Fitzhenry

"I don't think Impey is quite there yet, in terms of stage wins and I think he would need some bonus seconds to be in yellow. Quality rider, but still needs some experience in terms of hectic sprinting. This is the real deal." - Hanno Fourie
