Cape Town - Sport24 readers have voiced their opinions on whether the Cycle Tour's decision to opt for a significantly shorter route is the correct one.
Kurt Harman said: "I would have liked to know what other routes were explored. For instance did they consider Die Burger route as an alternative? Pity that an alternative could not be found that was at least a challenge."
Maretha Heyns said: "I vote for cancelling the Argus 2015. Let people keep their tickets for next year's race. Sponsors should take the financial loss knowing that this act of kindness and insight will benefit the race in the future. Afterall, THE ARGUS will never be 47km...circle rout"e!! Take responsibility for the unforseen, our environment and our people and postpone it to a genuine ARGUS race 2016!"
Michael Maytham said: "You need to take into account all the work that goes into sorting out disaster management scenarios. They would have to re-work all of those for a totally different route. They would need to inform residents of the new affected areas in good time (which they can't) and they would have to re-design every logistics plan. You can't expect 9 months of work to happen in 2 days. This is the safest alternative and one that if embraced in the correct spirit will result in a fantastic day out. If you are concerned about not getting a good enough work out, I would suggest riding harder sooner."
