Lions left sponsorless?

MTN’s decision not to renew their sponsorship of the Lions adds to the Lions problems for the new Super Rugby season. The year out of Super Rugby has already cost the Lions R45 million in income and the loss of their title sponsor without a replacement sponsor in place will add to the headaches in the Ellis Park executive offices. The MTN sponsorship was originally reported to be R20 million per year.

The protracted Currie Cup expansion saga added to the Lions struggle to secure or finalise sponsors and probably was a contributing factor to MTN finally deciding not to renew their sponsorship.
