Igesund criticism is OTT

I dont know – it seems a bit ridiculous to me all the criticism Gordon Ingesund is getting.

Before he took over we could barely score a goal. We had screwed up our world cup qualifying hopes by failing to beat Botswana away and Ethiopia at home. 2 pts from those 2 games was a disaster. He got us back to the point where it was basically a decider away to Ethiopia which we lost but before he took over we never looked like coming anywhere close to qualifying.

We lost to Mali on penalties in the quarter finals of Afcon which to be fair was a game we could have won. But we looked decent if not world beaters in that tournament.

Now we come to Chan which is a meaningless tournament in the first place. But then Ingesund is hamstrung by 4 top clubs including Pirates and Sundowns being given dispensation not to release players. Really – given this is not a first choice bafana side by a long shot this tournament should be judged independently of other results.

The team that played the world cup qualifiers and AFCON may not yet have been world beaters but they certainly looked to be on an upward curve given what we have seen since 2010. I really think any coach appointed to either the rugby or soccer side should always be given a full 4 year opportunity to go through a full qualifying lifecycle and I think another change now for Bafana would be a big mistake. Let Ingesund live or dies based on his ability to qualify for the 2018 world cup. In fairness Pitso should have been afforded the same luxury but I think the horse had basically bolted by the time he was fired anyway.
