Matfield return shocks fans

Cape Town - Sport24 readers have expressed shock at rumours of former Springbok Victor Matfield's impending return to Super Rugby for the Bulls.

According to reports, the Bulls are looking back in time to secure their Super Rugby future as TWO of their legendary stalwarts are set to return to the field for a comeback in the 2014 season.

Springbok Victor Matfield and Loftus’ 'Liefling' Derick Hougaard are training hard in Pretoria as they attempt to return to the field after a lengthy absence from the game.

Both comebacks have been privately confirmed by those close to the Bulls team, but no official comment has been received about Matfield and Hougaard returning to the field.

The Bulls officials have kept mum on the prospects of any comeback while both players are also keeping quiet about their movements.

Thi is what Sport24 readers had to say about Matfield's return:

"BRING OUT YOUR ANCESTORS TOO SEE IF BULLS CAN DO BETTER NEXT YEAR - THE GRANDPA'S ARE THERE WHAT NEXT." n- Joana Joana Jono

"Giant grandpas vs young midgets. Will take the giants." - Thoma Tardiskus

"I'd love to see Matfield back with Bakkies at top level rugby! Currently the Boks have no lock pair(s) that are half as good as these guys were. I genuinely believe these guys can take us through to the next RWC and take it!" - Adrian Bruwer

"If this thing of Victor is TRUE, WP will have to start talks with Hennie Bekker and Divan Serfontein also Carl Du Plessis. As we need cover at 9 and 11!" - Isak Visser

"If Matfield comes back things are starting to get embarrassing for the Bulls." - Kevin Robarts

"The other teams, like the Sharks and WP have been building for the future and are bringing young players through the ranks. Will the Bulls be sponsored by Grand-Pa next year?" - CIO

"Matfield...the blast from the past and no new "Jacarandas" for the Bullejies to call upon. More a case of dark...bleak...used goods...and desperation by the Koeie." - Sean Bagley

"Ek hoor Bakkies kom ook terug, so die beste slotpaar in die geskiedenis van wereldrugby weer terug by die Bulls! Manne hier kom 'n ding." - Honourable Doc Tyson

"Victor was a fantastic player but wasn't the most physical one, hence the enforcer role of his not as clever blood brother Bakkies. He'll struggle with the physicality in super 15 if he returns." - Gary Doyle

"What a f'n Joke! Victor b*gger off. And bakkies... Psdt and etzebeth are the future..." - Jason du Plessis

"Ysterbeth en Du Toit sal hierdie oupa vou en weg bere in die kas. During his last two seasons Matfield was more a link between forwards and backs. We need hard grafters and not locks hanging around in the midfield." - Binne Goed

"Matfield is oor die muur, finished en klaar." - BG

"Victor is boss. And he is not making a return. Dont be ridiculous. He hasnt played for 2 years." - TT

"While you add it bring back Naas and Joost as well. Loftus has lost the plot!" - Theuns Jacobs

"Vic was a great when he was playing and as desperate as the bulls are to get back to winning ways I don't think bring vic back is the answer but I might be wrong." Villiam Pelser

"I say why not? At Super Rugby level Matfield can add to a Bulls team woefully short of quality lineout locks with the departure of Juandre Kruger. However, he is 36, I wouldn't advise a return for the Springboks." - HQ
