Fans grumble as SA crumble

Cape Town - Sport24 readers have expressed their frustration with the Proteas after another batting collapse in the first ODI against Sri Lanka.

South Africa were shot out for 140 in reply to Sri Lanka's commanding 320/5 in a humiliating loss in Colombo in their first one-day international under new coach Russell Domingo.

South Africa were hoping to recover from recent setbacks in one-day cricket after they were knocked out in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy in the United Kingdom after their batting order fell apart.

Captain AB de Villiers had wanted the Proteas to use the tour of Sri Lanka to team-build toward the Cricket World Cup in two years, and said his young players are learning to perform without the stars, but so far the signs are not encouraging.

This is what fans had to say about the Proteas loss.

"That's it CSA, keep playing AB de Villiers as your captain and see how many more thrashings the Proteas are gonna get!" - Sean Bagley

"A good Captain gets the very best out of every individual." - Spike Porcupine

"The result of the loss was a batting collapse and that blame lies squarely on the performance of the top and middle order." - Boom Boom Afridi

"At the end of the day, cricket is unique as it is a team game, but one made up of individual performances. If the individuals aren't performing, and let's face it, a lot of them has been bad for a very long time, then the selectors need to carry the blame." - Henning Pantke

"The talent is out there but they are not given the opportunities! De Kock who averages close 60 in the 4 day domestic competition and averages more in domestic T20's then Faf and Miller do in ODI's. I can name 20 other players who deserve a place more than most of these players, look up Birch, Gqamane, Viljoen, Rossouw, Elgar etc. Nothing is wrong with our youth structures - it is our selection panel that should have resigned immediately after the Champions trophy farce." - Michael Redford

"Pathetic performance by Proteas! Good names in that side, should do much better than that." - Gary Doyle

"This is not funny anymore, surely we can do better than this. Is this the best team that we can put out there. It's starting to be an embarrassment to become a Protea fan."
- Mrova Blaza

"Well played SL. Proteas are Just a mediocre side." - Gunner ZN

"Kallis, Smith, Boucher, Pollock, Ntini, Gibbs and Klusener were all in the Proteas team that toured SL in 2004. Remember the result of that series? SL won 5-0." - Richard Barnes

"I can't see why they don't play Vernon Philander, and never have. Dale is still a must, as is Morkel. Smith, Kallis and Hashie missed. AB is awsome, but mustnt keep and captain the side too. Too much on his plate. We sorely miss a real spinner. We have never had one." - Graeme Blignault

"This team is in the same boat as the Aussies, they've lost experienced players and will take some time to build the bridge. We need more players to be exposed to top class cricket." - Johannes Stephanus de Villiers

"It's pure and simple. Not enough class players. Batting pretty schoolboy like. Domingo is in for a tough time." - Emile van Rooyen

"Inexperience is quoted as a reason for the crushing defeat. Think again. I think we should stop playing that card and look a bit deeper for the reasons. Of course we missed the seasoned players but that we can't hide behind that for ever." - YISIT
