Let me also try and answer my own question. If some teams with talented players are more consistent than others it can only be because of better leadership and coaching. Alternatively, they do not allow their confidence to be undermined because that's when the basics get forgotten. They cope better mentally. That is why there are probably over 10000 golfers in the world with the skills to compete at the highest level but less than 100 are consistent and mentally disciplined enough to stay at the top. Australia are simply far better than us in that regard, as well as other teams that embarrass us time after time in world cups. I would suggest that the only solution is to coach and clone our players to be far more steely, confident and mentally tough. That takes huge work and discipline which seems to be missing from our cricket culture. Agree that it does not come from simply moving around the deck chairs, assuming your selectors give you the best combinations in the first place and eliminate passengers. They and the coaches must also be far more accountable.
