These stupid boxing bouts starring rugby players like Quade Cooper and Sonny Bill Williams are nothing more than a cheap attempt for those rugby players to cash in on their rugby fame and massage their own egos.
The truth about boxing is that it is such a specialised sport that if you aren’t trained in it from an age of about eleven you are unlikely to ever be a title-holding world champion, these rugby players usually go up against over-the-hill challengers and get their records boosted by no-hopers, losers and pushovers, unfit boxers and people who basically no one would pay to go and see if there wasn’t a rugby player on the other side of the ring smashing them into oblivion.
Having said that I am not saying they shouldn’t have them. If there is a public interest then why not milk that cash cow. Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that you’re seeing the real thing, it’s nothing more than a sideshow for a sport that is dwindling in global popularity except in its very traditional strongholds like America and Britain, and even there, it’s losing ground to sports like UFC.
Sure Money Mayweather probably earns more money than any other athlete in the world but it’s only the very top of the sport that elicits any real interest.
