Bafana fans want Gavin Hunt

Cape Town - Sport24 readers reckon Gavin Hunt deserves a shot at the Bafana coaching job, following the departure of Igesund.

But will the Wits coach want the job that seems to have been a poisoned chalice for many of his predecessors, with 23 different coaches in the space of the last 22 years?

Igesund, who many felt did little wrong, tried in vain to rescue Bafana's Soccer World Cup qualifying campaign after Pitso Mosimane's reign had left Bafana in a perilous position in their group.

Ultimately, Bafana failed to qualify for the World Cup, losing out to eventual Group A winners Ethiopia.

Under Igesund Bafana reached the quarter-finals of the 2013 African Cup of Nations, where they were knocked out by Mali after losing a penalty shoot-out.

The final straw for Igesund appeared to be the 2014 African Nations Championship, where his side slumped to a humiliating defeat against Nigeria in the group stage, although Igesund had several key players injured or unavailable for selection during the tournament, and was forced to play a virtual 'B' team.

Although Igesund was not technically fired, SAFA chose not to renew his contract.

In an online poll conducted by Sport24, it appears that the public has lost patience with Bafana: 64% of those that voted believed that even Jose Mourinho would not be able to save Bafana from their slump.

But by far the most popular choice as Igesund's successor was Wits coach, Hunt, who has won five domestic trophies, and has won the PSL coach of the year award three times.

Hunt coached Wits to a third-place finish in this year's PSL campaign.

Sport24 asked:

"Who do you think should be hired as Bafana coach after Gordon Igesund's contract was not renewed?"

These were the results:

64% - Nobody can save Bafana!
13% - Gavin Hunt
8% - Ruud Krol
6% - We need to look at coaches outside of South Africa.
5% - Stuart Baxter
2% - Pitso Mosimane
1% - Cavin Johnson
1% - Vladimir Vermozevic
