Cape Town - Most Sport24 readers have said they expect CSA to announce AB de Villiers as the next captain of the Proteas Test team.

Earlier this week convener of selectors Andrew Hudson said the will take their time in appointing a new captain, but said the player must be part of the current set-up.

Hudson hinted that it was unlikely that the next Proteas Test skipper would be a surprise selection like Graeme Smith was.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) took a risk when it appointed Smith at the age of 22 in 2003.

Here's what Sport24 readers had to say about the next Proteas captain:

"AB should be and will be the next Proteas test captain and QdK will be the wicket-keeper. Dean Elgar will be GSmith replacement at the top of the batting order with Alviro." - Frank Gerald

"Think Ab should be made captain for at least the next 3 seasons until one of the current newbies has established themselves as a potential successor . Captaincy can be re-assessed at that stage." - Sam Marais

"AB is still my favourate we’ve seen how having more responsibility has helped his batting he might just get better as a captain, and no one is more certain of his place in the team in all format than him." - UFLB

"The next Skipper should not be a surprise, nor a difficult decision, AB. He is 30, so we really should be looking to him to lead a stable transistion for a few years; the main task is identifying who might follow AB, and groom them for the position in the interim." - MJ

"AB looks the obvious choice but can he handle it?" - Bongani Nsele

"For goodness sake, whats to consider? Faf or AB." - Priscilla Smith

"De Villiers most Def. Faf is not good enough." - Cal Clarke

"Keep calm and pick AB. Faf can be vice Captain." - Brandon FF

"AB is a no-brainer." - Jay Perie

"Has to be Faf or AB. I dont believe Alviro has fully established himself in the test squad enough! Ab and Faf have the international experience plus IPL..." - Paul Davies

"We have had enough of a captain who shouldn't even have been in the team based on his form." - Wouter de Vos

"If it's not AB, then it has to be Faf." - Jeremy Thorpe

"He has to be a disciplinarian like Kepler Wessels and a motivator and leader like Hansie Cronje .... it will be tough to find someone with both those qualities..." - Fawkes

"Knowing the South African selectors the new captain will be Abraham Benjamin Villiers." - Wolfgang Storm

"AB should come in as captain and Stiaan Van Zyl should be given an opportunity at the top of the order." - Ricus le Charl Swart

"AB obvious choice." - Camiel Philips

"AB capt fr test odi faf t20 duminy and de kock given those gloves its abt time." - Jabulani Kabingesi

"AB for captain. Start to bring de kock in as keeper." - Mike Knoetze

"AB is the man but with all the workload he has, they should get someone like FAF or JP Duminy." - Ramoshoeuo

"AB has the experience, although he has much to do as one of the seniors." - Dean de Chazal"AB for sure." - Rene Memmel

"1st choice = AB de Villiers. 2nd choice = Hashim Amla. 3rd choice Faf du Plessis." - Hein Espach

"AB without doubt......hope that means Quinton will Keep." - Glen Dick

"AB is de man." - Sheriff

"AB DE VILLIERS!!!" - Jasper Janssens
