Cape Town - Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel has urged Formula 1 chiefs to "make sure we string the field together more in dry conditions", after a string of entertaining races in wet conditions.

The French Grand Prix was described as dull as Lewis Hamilton won from pole to flag to give Mercedes their 10th consecutive win of the season.

Hamilton was quick to urge fans and pundits not to "point the fingers at the drivers because we don't write the rules".

He added: "This is a constant cycle of Formula One, for years and years and years even before I got here, it's because of the way Bernie [Ecclestone] had it set up and the decisions that were made then are still the same."

However, the F1 gods have been smiling on the sport since then as the Austrian, British, German and Hungary Grands Prix have all thrilled.

F1's role players are looking at the 2021 rules and Vettel urged them not to be swayed by the recent exciting races.

"Wet races always create chaos and chaos is something that can be very entertaining, we know that and we've seen it many times," he is quoted as saying by Motorsportweek.com.

"I think the job to do is make sure we string the field together more in dry conditions, when we have normal races, in order to put on a better sport and for us to be able to race each other harder and longer throughout the race.

"That's the objective for the future.

"I think there's key elements contributing to that and that's what we should focus on and everything else, I don't think we need to change everything upside down just for the sake of changing. The DNA of the sport is great, it's the same DNA as 50 years ago.

"I don't think you change football the size of the goal or number of strikers just because one match has been less entertaining, so I think keeping the rules, or the format, as it is the right way to go and there's some big things we need to correct in order to have the right impact."
