Cape Town - Formula One great Michael Schumacher is set to move to Spain, where a £27 million (R495 million) mansion awaits.

According to the Stuff website, Schumacher has been rehabilitating at his family home in Switzerland since 2014, after he was placed in a medically-induced coma following a skiing accident in the French alps the year before, where he suffered a head injury.

In an interview with Swiss magazine L'Illustre, Katia Rouarch, the mayoress of Andratx, suggested the 49-year-old would soon be on the move.

She told the magazine: "I can officially confirm Michael Schumacher is going to move in to our municipality and that everything is being prepared to welcome him".

Spanish magazine Marca reported it had also also confirmed the move.

It was not known exactly when Schumacher would arrive or how long he would be staying there.

Last month, German newspaper Bild reported that Schumacher's wife, Corinna, had bought a mansion on the island from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for £27 million.

She purchased the property near Andratx in the southwest of the island in order to spend holidays there with her children and friends, Bild reported.

Schumacher used to spend holidays on the island in the past while his brother Ralf has also spent time there.

The 15 000 square metre estate is said to boast two swimming pools, a helipad, a gym and a huge palm-tree-fringed garden.

Schumacher is the most successful driver in F1 history, winning seven titles from 1994 to 2004.

He retired at the end of the 2006 season, but later returned for a final three-year stint in 2010.
