Russell: The aim is to push Williams forward

Cape Town - George Russell says he's not in F1 to race for 19th or 20th so his goal as a Williams driver will be to help Robert Kubica push the team "forward."

Russell will make his Formula 1 debut next season, stepping up after winning this year's Formula 2 championship.

The Brit, though, is going from fighting for wins and titles to racing for a team that this season finished bottom of the championship.

Williams managed just seven points in 21 grands prix as their FW41 failed to deliver or respond to upgrades that the team introduced throughout the season.

Getting Williams back on track is Russell's goal.

"My outright main target is to push Williams to progress back up the field and get them back to where they belong," he told Sky Sports News.

"Neither myself nor Robert are interested in fighting each other for 19th and 20th on the grid, so our primary focus is to work together on the team to push us forward.

"Then the results start coming in we can start thinking about each other."

The 20-year-old will be spending time at the Grove headquarters in the build-up to the season as he adjusts to life in the big leagues.

"Just spending time with the team," he said.

"I've gone from working with 30 people in Formula 2 to 750 at Williams so just getting to know everybody, going round all the different departments and just building myself into this team."
