Ricciardo open to Red Bull return

Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo has admitted he would consider a return to Red Bull after his contract with Renault comes to an end at the conclusion of this season.

The Aussie made a shock big-money move to Renault ahead of the 2019 season, going from a race-winning Red Bull car to driving a Renault that was trying to break away from the midfield pack.

But the French manufacturer fell short of their expectations in 2019, dropping behind customer team McLaren to P5 in the Constructors’ Championship, while Ricciardo was forced to settle for P9 in the Drivers’ standings.

Ricciardo’s deal is up at the end of the year though, and he isn’t closing the door on returning to Red Bull if there is an opening.

"Would I ever rule out going to Red Bull? No... I think something I’ve learned growing up in life is never say never," he said on Sky Sports’ vodcast.

"It is hard having chats right now, because we are at a stalemate - nothing’s really happened. Normally chats start to come off the back of races, results and momentum.

"There’s honestly not a lot to talk about for now, it’s more about the current situation and how we’re going to deal with it. It’s all pretty slow and steady to be honest at this stage."

As reported by the Daily Mail, F1 are looking to start the 2020 season in Ricciardo’s home country of Australia in early July - as long as the Covid-19 pandemic doesn’t ruin those plans again. This counters previous rumours that the Austrian Grand Prix would start the new season.

Two races at Silverstone Circuit in England are then set to follow, while all races which take place in the other European nations could be behind closed doors due to the social distancing rules and bans on gatherings.
