Mercedes boss monitoring Mick Schumacher progress

Cape Town - Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has hinted at one day offering a contract to Mick Schumacher, but insists he needs "time to grow and improve".

The 19-year-old won the F3 European Championships in 2018 and is due to race in Formula 2 in 2019 with Prema Racing.

Schumacher impressed throughout the campaign which included victory in all three races at the Nürburgring over one weekend, before following that up with back-to-back wins at the Red Bull Ring next time out.

"Have I already offered him a contract?” Joked Wolff at German publication Bild.

“He won his Formula 3 title with a Mercedes engine.

“But for now we need to give it time to grow and improve.”

Wolff also commented on Mick’s father, Michael, who suffered devastating head injuries in a skiing accident in 2013.

Very little has been heard about the seven-time World Champion since.

"Michael is always present in my personal life and in that of Mercedes.” Said Wolff.

“We always think about him.

“For me he is the most outstanding rider of all time, with an incredible personality.

“Michael is one of the founding fathers of the recent success of Mercedes in F1 and helped to create these facilities from 2010 to 2012.”
