Cape Town - Romain Grosjean's team boss Guenther Steiner summed up his penalty points situation, conceding his driver is on "very thin ice."
Grosjean was slapped with two points last time out in Singapore for ignoring blue flags in what F1 race director Charlie Whiting called the "worst case" he had seen in years.
That put the Haas driver, who on Friday was confirmed by the team for next season, onto nine points with 12 points in a rolling 12 month period earning the driver a one-race ban.
"He should be very careful but I think he knows that," Haas team boss Steiner said.
"We are on very thin ice at the moment with that."
He does, however, feel Grosjean's penalty was a bit harsh given that he was locked in a battle with Sergey Sirotkin at the time.
"We always talk about more racing, but as soon as they start to race we have to stop [for blue flags], because a rule comes out that you are not allowed to race," he said.
"We want to have our cake and eat it.
"But ultimately he got the penalty and now he has to be careful.
"Fair or not fair, we couldn't score points anyway, so it doesn't really matter for us.
"It's just not ideal for Romain's penalty point account."
As for Grosjean, he's promised to avoid doing anything "silly" at the Sochi circuit.
He said: "I'm not here to crash, I'm not here to do anything silly.
"It's F1, and we still need to deliver a good performance.
"So I'll make sure that I don't do anything silly, but I'll still be pushing and racing and doing my job.
"When you look back at the points I got, some you can really explain, some others are more questionable, but there they are."
