Andretti wants Ferrari in IndyCar

Racing legend Mario Andretti believes Ferrari need to pivot into IndyCar racing.

Ferrari recently raised questions about its Formula One future as the Scuderia’s team boss, Mattia Binotto, voiced his unhappiness at talk of slashing the budget cap.

Ferrari denied that it was threatening to quit F1, but it would be the first time - nor is it likely to be the last.

Andretti, who has raced in IndyCars and in F1 where he won the 1978 Drivers’ Championship, reckons it may be time for Ferrari to seek new pastures on the other side of the pond.

But in order for that to happen, the IndyCar rules will have change as at present all the chassis are made by Dallara while only Chevrolet and Honda supply engines.

“Having Ferrari would be incredible,” Andretti told Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Not only as an engine supplier, but also as a chassis builder.

“It is clear that the rules should be changed, but I would like an all-Italian Dallara v Ferrari battle.

“The Cavallino (Ferrari’s Prancing Horse symbol) would increase interest in the championship, but there is an obstacle in the rules.

“I suggest Binotto comes and proposes an idea to Roger Penske.”

This season McLaren will contest a full IndyCar series, its first entry into an American open-wheel championship since 1979.

The British company will contest the season in a partnership with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in a venture officially titled Arrow McLaren Racing SP.
