Marquez takes pole for Indy race

Indianapolis - Two-time world champion Marc Marquez claimed pole position for Sunday's Indianapolis MotoGP in qualifying on Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, riding for the Repsol Honda Team, posted the quickest time with a lap in 1:31.884.

Marquez, undefeated in MotoGP competition on US soil, will seek a third consecutive victory in the eight-year-old Indianapolis event.

Marquez said he was happy with Saturday's performance.

"Looks like here we are able to be fast," he added. "The key of the race, I think on the last laps everybody will be struggling with rear grip.

"But we will try to do our best and try to be there ready for a fight. So tomorrow will be an interesting race."

Counting 2011 and 2012 wins in Moto2, he's in line for a fifth win at the famed IndyCar circuit.

Marquez became the first man to win three consecutive poles in this event. In 10 MotoGP outings this season he's won five poles. During his MotoGP career, Marquez has 27 poles in 47 races.

Spanish riders will have the front row for Sunday's race.

Dani Pedrosa, Marquez's Honda team-mate, posted the day's second-fastest qualifying time of 1:32.055 while Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha starts in the third position after a qualifying run of 1:32.186.

Season points leader Valentino Rossi of Yamaha qualified eighth on Saturday, which ties his lowest qualifying spot of the season.
