Cape Town - SA's top ranked golfer Louis Oosthuizen said he is "excited" for this year's Presidents Cup after he automatically qualified for the biennial match play event on Sunday.

Oosthuizen was the only South African to make the Top 8 in the International Presidents Cup standings.

Fellow South African Ernie Els will captain the International team.

"I'm excited. Ernie has really put a lot of work into it and doing things a little different. Knowing Ernie (Els), living close to him and being a good friend, it makes it more special to be on this team," said Oosthuizen.

"Everyone has been excited over the last few months due to what Ernie is already doing for us. It's great to see Abraham Ancer get into the team, he's been playing well for a long time, it's good to see youngsters and new faces in the Top 8."

This will be the 2010 Open Championship winner's fourth Presidents Cup tournament.

Oosthuizen established a formidable partnership with fellow countryman Branden Grace in 2015 and won all four of their matches together.

This 2018/19 season, Oosthuizen claimed victory at the European Tour's SA Open in late 2018 to end a 33-month winless run.

The 36-year-old has produced five Top-10s on the PGA Tour to date including a T2 at the Valspar Championship.

"Louis is just so solid as a player. He's a team guy and I can't ask for a better player to be on this team," said Els.

"He's got a great sense of humour and he can keep the guys loose. Everything you can think of in a team environment, that's Louis. He loves the competition. He loves getting up for it and he's great in a team format."

Els will choose his four wildcard selections in the week of November 4.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will take place at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club from December 9-15.
