FINALLY! A golfer commits to Rio Olympics

Cape Town - American's Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed have confirmed they will be competing at the Rio Olympics next month.

It is a huge relief for the US team, who were rocked by the withdrawal of US Open winner Dustin Johnson last week and are still waiting on world No 3 Jordan Spieth.

Fowler, one of the world's most marketable players, confirmed his participation in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Reed spoke to the press following his T10 finish at the Scottish Open on Sunday.

"I got the email and I got a phone call from Team USA last night and went through a lot of things with them, and we're all in," the world No 13 told Golfweek.

"There weren't doubts as much as clarifications. I wasn't in any of the meetings because I was always on the outside. Now that I'm on the inside, I was able to talk to the right people and figure out everything that's going on and what the plans are.

"How's the Zika virus and how's the security were really my only main concerns. Yes, it's a risk, but I feel it's a risk that we're all willing to take."

The US golf team now officially consists of Fowler, Reed and two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson.

Spieth would take up the fourth spot if he decides to attend Rio, otherwise veteran Matt Kuchar is believed to be available.
