South African golfing legend Ernie Els has congratulated compatriot Trevor Immelman on his selection as the new International team Presidents Cup captain.

QUIZ | Can you name the last 20 Masters champions?

On Tuesday it was confirmed that Immelman would succeed Els as leader of the International team as they look to rebound from their brave 16-14 defeat against Tiger Woods' United States side at last year's contest at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

Immelman, 40, was an assistant to Els in Australia in 2019, and steps up to take over as the youngest ever International team skipper in Presidents Cup history.

Els took to social media to write: Congrats @TrevorImmelmanon being appointed captain of the #internationalteam. Love you guys @PresidentsCup

Immelman will become the third South African to lead the team which comprises players from countries outside of the United States and Europe.

Gary Player (2003, 2005, 2007) and Els (2019) were the two South Africans to have previously held the honour of skipper, while other captains since the inaugural tournament in 1994 have been Zimbabwe's Nick Price (2013, 2015, 2017) and Australia trio Greg Norman (2009, 2011), Peter Thomson (1996, 1998, 2000) and David Graham (1994).

Of the 13 editions to date, the United States have won 11 (including the last seven), while the International team has tasted victory just once - at Royal Melbourne in 1998. There was also one memorable tie in 2003 at The Links at Fancourt.

Immelman is a two-time Presidents Cup competitor (2005, 2007) and won the 2008 Masters in his biggest triumph of his career at date.

The 2021 Presidents Cup will be staged at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte from 30 September to 3 October.

The new United States team captain, assuming Woods elects to step down, will be announced at a later date.
