Bekker enjoying his US Open moment

Cape Town - South African golfer Oliver Bekker's first round at the US Open didn't go as well as he expected.

Bekker ended off the first round at the US Open three-over-par 75 - 10 shots behind leader Rickie Fowler.

"It wasn't my best golf on Thursday," Bekker admits to Sport24.

"I didn't hit the ball as well as I would have liked. I had one bad hole that cost me."

Bekker was referring to the 17th hole, where he shot a triple bogey to end his first round on a sour note.

"I got my swing back on track the last couple of holes and afterwards on the range," he said.

Bekker has the opportunity to gain some momentum and move up the leaderboard and says that his short-term goal is to make the cut.

"So I'm hoping to keep that feeling going today (Friday). I need to probably shot about 70 to make the cut that's the short term goal."

"The greens and weather should be amazing on Friday, since I'm first off in the morning. So I need to take advantage of that. Then after that, all I can do is enjoy the moment."

Despite the ongoing controversy over the Erin Hills Golf Course, the South African had no complaints whatsoever.

"Course is playing really fair. Long, but fair. So no complaints about that," he added.

Bekker tees off on Friday at 13:45 SA time.
