Karmis takes final round lead at Selborne

Pennington - Peter Karmis' unblemished second-round seven-under 65 - which took his tournament score to 10-under - gave him a three-shot cushion at the summit of the leaderboard going into the final round of the Origins of Golf at Selborne Park Golf Club.

He needed a solid showing in the second round after his opening 69 left him three shots behind overnight leader Neil Schietekat, and he produced just that on Friday.

He made birdies on the first, third and sixth holes to turn in 33. His homeward nine was just as eventful as four more birdies - on holes 10, 12, 17 and the last - made it onto his scorecard to secure the top spot ahead of the final round.

"I played very nicely today," he said. "I just kept it together and had a good finish as well. The course, I think, is tricky and the greens are quite firm. Some very good pin locations today and yesterday, so I think you just have to aware of where you are leaving yourself."

Starting off early when the wind had not picked up yet - and it eventually picked up later in the afternoon - Karmis noted that for him, coastal winds are nothing to lose his sleep over.

"This morning there was actually no wind and when it did pick up, I thought 'good for me'," he said.

Lying two shots behind Karmis, and not so fortunate with the wind starting in the afternoon, Wynand Dingle produced a hard-fought 69 to back up his opening 67. He made six birdies but shots dropped on the third, 16th and 17th holes took from those gains. In spite of those, however, Dingle was still happy.

"Happy to be where I am," he said. "The last couple of weeks I've been playing some really nice golf. Top 10 at Zebula and I was up there the whole week last week but didn’t capitalise on the final day. So, I'm happy to be finding some nice form."

He, unfortunately, had the swirling winds to contend with in the afternoon.

"It was quite difficult," he admitted. "It was about a one and a half, two club, wind but it died down late in my round. Poor ball-striking on my part made it difficult."

Schietekat's 71 took his total to seven-under and three shots back and he knows he has an opportunity to add a second title to his name this season, having already claimed the Sun City Challenge two months ago.

"I am three back and depending on the weather, the game plan might change," he said. "It won't change early on; however, I might play the first nine holes the way I have played them so far but then if I need to chase, the game plan changes, without being stupid, obviously. I am really looking forward to tomorrow."

Occupying the fourth spot is the duo of Colin Nel and Daniel Greene who both signed for a 70 in round two to total six-under for the week. Andrew Curlewis and Rourke van der Spuy share sixth on five-under while England's Steve Surry, Alex Haindl, Ruan Conradie, Jacques Blaauw, Garth Mulroy and Herman Loubser share eighth on four-under.
