Hicks ahead as storm delays PGA Championship

Eikenhof - A pair of eagles on Friday for first-round leader Justin Hicks of the United States saw him card a four-under-par 68 and move to 13-under-par, good enough for the lead as a storm brought a premature end to play during the second round of the Eye of Africa PGA Championship.

The 42-year-old, who lives in Florida, had a three-stroke edge over Bloemfontein’s MJ Viljoen, who carded a second-round 69. In a share of third on nine-under were Daniel Greene, who had finished his round, and Tjaart van der Walt, who still had five holes to complete, but was in the process of compiling a scintillating round with six birdies through 13 holes.

“Both eagles were a little on the unexpected side,” said Hicks.

“Holing the wedge shot on four, you never really feel like you’re going to make those necessarily. I thought I might hit it close. And then I made a nice putt on 11. I think the ball was rolling a little faster than I anticipated, but it caught the hole and dropped in there.”

Behind Greene and Van der Walt, Doug McGuigan had completed his second round, his five-under-par 67 lifting him to eight-under, while Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Dean Burmester still had to complete their rounds, and were both also on eight-under. Bezuidenhout had five holes to complete, and Burmester seven.

Play in the second round will resume at 07:10 on Saturday, and the third round will not start before 10:00. Play in that third round will be in three-balls.
