Surry survives Humewood wind

Port Elizabeth - The wind gusted up to 60 kilometres per hour on Thursday at Humewood Golf Club and the second round of the Sun Boardwalk Golf Challenge had to be suspended at 12.55pm, but Steve Surry had already made it to the clubhouse in one-over-par 73.

“Shooting 73 today feels like 65 to be honest. It was tough out there and blew just the same as yesterday. There were a few par-fours that I couldn’t reach in two shots,” he told sunshinetour.com.

The Englishman carded the best round of the morning to lead in the clubhouse on a level-par total. He’ll wait to see what the afternoon holds from his perch in the clubhouse, safe from the trying conditions.

“I had 30 putts today, yesterday I had 26, and that’s been the key in this wind. If they keep playing this afternoon then level-par after two rounds will be a good score, considering the conditions,” he said.

Surry is accustomed to bad weather from his days competing in England, which helped him to stay focused in the strong winds.

“The weather sort-of suits me, because I’m used to it. I’m lucky enough to have played Humewood a lot of times. I started solid and went two-under through seven, and even though I bogeyed eight and nine I did putt and chip well,” he said.

When he travels to South Africa he stays with Sunshine Tour champion Lyle Rowe and has often practiced on the links.

“When I come down here I stay with Lyle in Port Elizabeth, so I’ve played Humewood about 20 times. There are a couple of us that stay at his house and we play practice rounds together, so it’s quite nice playing a course that I’m familiar with,” said Surry.
