Curlewis leads in Langebaan

Langebaan - Andrew Curlewis nearly withdrew from the Vodacom Origins of Golf due to illness, so he was pleasantly surprised when he shot 66 on Friday to share the second-round lead with Englishman Henry Featherstone.

Justin Harding carded 34 on either side of the turn at Langebaan Country Estate to move within one shot of the lead.

“I’m just getting over some flu at the moment, so today was a little unexpected. It was quite a grind out there, but I managed to make a few greens and some putts dropped,” Curlewis said.

The three-time Sunshine Tour winner went around Langebaan Country Estate in six-under-par.

“Yesterday it was blowing a gale, but today was a perfect morning,” said Curlewis. “It gives you a few more scoring chances out there. I’m playing nicely and only made three bogeys, so it was a good time to get going.”

Coastal golf is a rare treat for the 31-year-old, who grew up in the seaside town of Margate. He was able to handle the wind better than most during round one and then took advantage of the easier conditions and shot 66 a day later.

“It does help having played in this before. You have to stay calm and try to make relaxed swings. There are lots of risk and reward holes and all-around it’s a top-class golf course, so it was nice to take advantage a couple of times today,” he said.

The R650 000 tournament is the first of six in the Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung, which has a new format that separates the pro-am from the main event.

“It’s a nice format and the pro-am is a lot more social. It changed this year and I think it’s for the better. This is a brilliant series and Vodacom have been good to us. Long may it continue,” said Curlewis.
