Cape Town - South African golfer Ernie Els confirmed that he'll still compete on the main tours after making his PGA Tour Champions debut this past weekend.

The PGA Tour Champions is a membership organisation of professional golfers aged 50 and older, and includes 33 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The four-time major champion starred in his first PGA Tour Champions event at the season-opener Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualala.

He finished the tournament on 14-under and competed in a three-way playoff with Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and American Fred Couples.

Els went onto par the second playoff hole, as Jimenz birdied to win his ninth PGA Tour Champions title.

"Obviously it was a bit disappointing not to get the win ... But actually it's all good. I can reflect on a great week, really enjoyed my debut," Els wrote in his newsletter.

Despite impressing in his first Champions event, Els revealed that he hasn't given up on playing on the PGA and European Tour.

"At this stage we're not sure how many tournaments I'll play this year on the Champions Tour. We're just looking at the schedules at the moment," he wrote.

"The truth is, even though I've enjoyed almost 30 years on the PGA Tour and European Tour, it feels a little too soon to call time completely on that part of my career. So my intention is to play across the main tours and the Champions Tour."

Els' next event will be on Thursday, January 30 at the European Tour's Saudi International at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club.
