Cape Town - Brooks Koepka will once again replace Justin Rose as world No 1 on Monday, despite the fact that neither player will be in action this weekend.

Rose has opted against playing in this week's Nedbank Challenge on the European Tour, while Koepka also won't be in action stateside for this week's Mayakoba Classic in Mexico.

The Englishman took over at the top of the world rankings from Koepka on Monday after his victory at the Turkish Open. That was just a few weeks after Koepka supplanted Rose at the top with his win at the CJ Cup.

You'd think things would remain unchanged with neither player set to play this weekend, but that's not the case.

Rose currently has 10.29 points, with Koepka in second on 10.24. After this week, Koepka will have 10.32 points and Rose will have 10.16.

It seems few people possess the arcane knowledge required to make sense of exactly why this is, but suffice it to say it has to do with the vagaries of the world ranking system.

According to golf ranking specialists, Koepka's divisor dropped from 45 to 44 in the two-year Official World Golf Ranking calendar, resulting in his average points rising enough to surpass Rose.

Got that? We didn't think so.
