Mexico City - American Bryson DeChambeau apologised on Friday after a TV camera caught him slamming his putter into a practice green a day earlier at the WGC-Mexico Championship.
"I want to apologize to my fans, fellow players and the staff at Chapultepec for my actions following the round yesterday," DeChambeau, owner of five US PGA Tour wins, said in a statement posted on Twitter.
"I am an extremely passionate player and I am always working on ways to be better. I am certainly not perfect but I respect the grounds staff and the game of golf and am focused on working harder on this just like I do on my golf game."
DeChambeau, also a winner at last month's European Tour Dubai Desert Classic, had completed a four-over par first round that left him 12 off the pace when the incident occurred, and struggles on the green were key to his lackluster score.
His frustration spilled over with his swipe at the green - which was clearly visible in the background of a SkySports interview.
