McIlroy donates driver to Facebook fan

Shanghai - Rory McIlroy may have been laid low by food poisoning ahead of Thursday's WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, but he still found time to give away a driver to an astonished fan on Facebook.

Barry Edwards posted a message on McIlroy's Facebook page saying he needed a new driver and asking if he could have one of the Northern Irishman's old ones.

He couldn't believe the response. "Sure. I'll send you a Nike covert driver. Served me well! Message me your address and my team will ship it to you," McIlroy posted.

"I was joking lol... But would be very, very greatful (sic)," replied Edwards.

"No joke. Message me and I'll have one shipped. Can't guarantee 320 yard drives though!!" replied the world number three.

McIlroy used the Nike covert driver last year when he won both The British Open and the US PGA Championship. He now uses a newer model and clearly doesn't have a sentimental attachment to the old club -- but it's a safe bet that Edwards will.
