Why Oosthuizen called it quits at PGA Championship

Cape Town - A sore back is the reason for Louis Oosthuizen’s withdrawal from the PGA Championship on Thursday.

LIVE: 100th PGA Championship

The South African withdrew less than an hour before his scheduled tee time, giving American Kelly Kraft a spot in the field at the 100th PGA Championship at the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.

The official announcement was made about 10 minutes before Oosthuizen's scheduled tee time, though Kraft had been warming up in case he got a chance. He joined a group along with Thomas Pieters and Bill Haas.

Tournament organisers initially did not provide details of Oosthuizen's injury, but later revealed that it was due to a back injury.

Oosthuizen, the 2010 Open Championship winner, finished second to American Justin Thomas at last year's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

His withdrawal means there are only five South Africans remaining in the field: Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, Brandon Stone, Dylan Frittelli and Justin Harding.
