Grace flies SA flag at year's final major

Cape Town - Branden Grace flew the South African flag at the year's final golf major - the PGA Championship - at Whistling Straits in Kohler, America at the weekend.

Grace, 27, finished in third position with an impressive score of 15-under par, five shots behind champion Jason Day of Australia and two behind America's Jordan Spieth.

It was Day's maiden win at a major championship having come close on several previous attempts.

Grace put himself into contention with a remarkable 64 on Saturday, but shot 69 on Sunday which left him behind the two pace-setters.

George Coetzee fared second best of the South Africans, finishing on 12-under par after shooting 67 in Sunday's final round.

Ernie Els finished tied for 25th on 5-under par, while Louis Oosthuizen (-4) and Charl Schwartzel (-3) were further back.

The other South Africans competing in the event - Tim Clark, Rory Sabbatini and Johan Kok (SA-born) - had missed the cut.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who returned to action this week after an ankle injury layoff, finished alone in 17th place on 9-under but it wasn't enough to see him relinquish his world No 1 spot to Spieth, who won this year's Masters and US Open titles.

The year's other major, the Open Championship, was won by America's Zach Johnson.

Johnson had pipped Oosthuizen in a playoff at St Andrews, but he failed to make the cut at Whistling Straits.
