Cape Town - It seems the whole world was watching Tiger Woods' Masters victory at Augusta on Sunday - even President Donald Trump.
So much so that he has bestowed the top civilian award in the United States on the golfing legend.
Trump tweeted on Monday that he had personally spoken to Woods to congratulate him on his win and that he would be awarding him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
"Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!"
Woods' win was his first major since the 2008 US Open and his first win at Augusta since 2005.
Trump is an especially close watcher of the game, being the owner of Trump-brand golf courses and something of a student of the game himself - although there have been multiple reports, including from established golfers, that he cheats when competing.
Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!
