Cape Town - South African golf icon Gary Player has heaped praise on Tiger Woods for winning the "impossible" when the American romped to his 15th Major title at Augusta National on Sunday.

The victory was Woods' first Major title since his 2008 US Open win, as he clinched a one-stroke victory - and picked up a fifth green jacket.

Player, who is a three-time Masters champion, took to Twitter to congratulate Woods and stated that his win was "great for the game of golf".

"It has been a long & uncertain journey of 14 years since your last Green Jacket. A monumental challenge. For most an impossible task. But not for you," wrote Player.

"Congratulations Tiger. So special for you & your family. So great for the game of golf. Simply unbelievable."
