While some feel the postponed Masters should not be rescheduled to a later date this year, Rory McIlroy believes holding it in the Autumn could be "pretty cool".

The global coronavirus pandemic has led to the prestigious major being postponed from its traditional April date for only the third time in its history.

Reports claim that, should fears over the virus have eased by that time, Augusta National is looking to stage the tournament in October.

Any sooner would not be possible as the venue completely shuts down from May to the end of September due to the intense summertime heat.

Speaking to Brad Faxon on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, McIlroy said he kind of likes the idea of holding the Masters in Autumn.

"It gives us some room for maneuvering, depending on what happens over the next few weeks," the World No 1 said.

"A Masters in the fall, October time, I think it would be pretty cool. It would be a very different look than what you usually see at Augusta. I think it's definitely a possibility if they want to get the 2020 Masters in, I think that could definitely be a possibility. I'm sure they can make it happen if they want it to happen."

McIlroy says he's still hopeful that the players will be back in action sooner rather than later.

"I like to think that we can get a handle on this over the next sort of couple of months, and things can return to some sort of normality," he said.

"But I don't think anyone knows, really."
