Put your money where your mouth is

Former world No 1 Luke Donald celebrated his birthday on the Sunday of the 2014 Nedbank Golf Challenge. But one lucky golf fan was already popping the champagne two days before.

A bet of R1 000 at odds of 25/1 on Donald shooting the lowest round on the Friday was rewarded when the Englishman did just this with his second round of 63, earning the fan R25 000.

It’s no wonder then that Jonathan Kahn of SunBet will tell you, “Betting on golf has fun written all over it”.

SunBet is Sun International’s exciting new sports betting brand and the official bookmaker of the Nedbank Golf Challenge. There are various betting locations at Sun City during the tournament, or punters can bet online at www.sunbet.co.za.

And according to Kahn, a bet on your favourite player can truly enhance your experience of the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

“It often turns out to be a nailbiting, roller-coaster ride of birdies, bogeys and playoffs. And you’ll be sharing some of that pressure when your player is lined up over that five-foot putt for the win.”

And Kahn has advice for those wanting to get into the betting game at this year’s tournament.

“The best way to get into golf betting is betting on the outright tournament winner. In the outright betting there is great value with odds as high as around 6/1 for the favourite or better. You can pick up some great players with a very good chance to win at prices of around 20/1 and better. The great thing also about this bet is that as tournaments are four days, if at any point you believe your original pick is not looking too good for the win, you can still back another player.

“You can even wait for the tournament to start without even placing a bet, see the players’ form on day one and day two, and then make your bet. We also offer live in-play betting on the outright winner, so you can watch hole-by-hole on TV and then make the bet when you feel you’ve found the winner.”

Kahn says another popular bet is that of the day’s leader.

“For example, you know a certain player generally gets off to a great start firing at his best on day one. You can bet on that player to be the tournament leader for round one’s play.”

Betting on a particular group of players is also very popular.

“Here you can bet on the pairings against each other. For example, player A and player B are partnered together for a round, so you can bet on player B to beat player A.”

For the slightly more conservative, Kahn suggests betting on a top five or top 10 finish.

“This is similar to a place bet in horse racing. This bet is great when you fancy a golfer to do well in a particular tournament, but you aren’t confident of the player actually winning.”

So get on board with SunBet and make sure that on Sunday afternoon, when that golfer is standing over a putt to win $1.25 million, you’ve got a few Rands riding on that putt as well.
