Willett 'sacked' by caddie

Cape Town - Danny Willett has parted ways with caddie Jonathan Smart just a year after winning the Masters.

The duo have been friends since they were young, but tensions rose after they had a falling out during April's RBC Heritage, a tournament in which Willett missed the cut.

Smart was upset following the spat and quit as Willett’s caddie mid-tournament, according to the BBC.

"Things are a bit stale and kind of fizzled out," Willett told BBC Sport.

"It is a shame. But things happen and change, everything happens for a reason.

"We are still working hard to get the game in shape to get back playing the golf we know we can play."

Willett has not ruled out the chance of Smart returning as his caddie, but had to use a member of his management team as caddie in the second round at the RBC Heritage.

The Sheffield native will use Sam Haywood, the best man at his wedding, during this week's Players Championship in Florida.

"Sam knows my game really well," Willett told the BBC.

"We've played a lot of golf together over the last 10 or 15 years. It's nice having someone who you can speak frankly with. He knows where my game is and when it's good. I think it's going to be good."

Willett's form has suffered since he won last year's Masters and he has not won a tournament since.

He missed the cut as defending champion at Augusta in April.

His loss of form has seen him fall down the world rankings to 21st place.
