London - Ian Poulter is keen to back up his runner-up finish at The Players Championship with a good result at the BMW PGA Championship.

The Englishman has experienced a massive change in fortune of late. In the lead up to The Players, Poulter was on the cusp of losing his PGA Tour card altogether after a foot injury put him out for four months last year.

But a reallocation of points due to a medical exemption saw him keep his card and he celebrated with a superb second place around TPC Sawgrass.

Now, the BMW PGA has extended an invite to the 12-time European tour champion and he is just chomping at the bit to get out there.

"For me, to have played well last week and locked up everything in America has now freed my summer up and meant I can come back and play in some of the big events in Europe, which I'm really looking forward to," the 41-year-old told

"Everyone on the European Tour has been incredibly supportive and that has helped me be free and clear on what I needed to do in my own mind."

The West Course has undergone some drastic changes for this years’ championship and Poulter is excited as a result.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the changes that have been made at Wentworth," added Poulter, whose last win was in 2012.

"Everything the guys - Thomas [Bjorn] , Paul [McGinley] - have done to improve the course makes me want to jump back on a plane to the UK. It's just what I need - the chance to come back to Britain and play some golf and enjoy it.

"It seems the changes they have made are what the West Course deserves and it is going back to its rightful self, so respect to the club, to the European Tour and to the guys involved for making those changes and I'm sure the players will enjoy playing it next week."

The 2017 BMW PGA Championship tees off on the West Course at Wentworth on 25 May.
