Cape Town - Wade Ormsby grabbed the first-round lead at the European Tour's Scandinavian Invitation courtesy of a spectacular 62.

The Australian carved up the Hills Golf & Sports Club in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Thursday, firing an eagle and six birdies to take the lead on eight under par.

Orsmby is still looking for his first win of the 2019 Race to Dubai campaign after coming up just short at the ISPS Handa Vic Open at the start of the year.

"I felt quite comfortable out there, I was holing my return putts and that kept the round going, which added up to 62," he told the European Tour after his round.

"I felt like I had been hitting the ball quite well, I just wasn’t quite free enough in my putting, so I was working hard on that to get back to a point where I feel more comfortable and less into my technique.

"I putted well today, didn’t putt amazing, but holed what I needed to."

Orsmby lies one stroke clear of Frenchman Alexander Levy and local favourite Joakim Lagergren, who clearly seemed to enjoy playing in front of his home crowds.

Twenty-nine-year-old Levy also made a great start as he chases a first title of the year, and sixth overall in Europe.

"I think I played really well today. Hit some really good shots, especially the birdie I made on the par three on the back nine, with a good shot so that was nice," said Levy.

"Plus, I holed some nice putts, so that is the really good news of the day."

Lying alone in fourth after an opening 64 is England's Matthew Fitzpatrick, the highest-ranked player in the field this week.

South African Erik van Rooyen shares fifth place a further shot back alongside Matthew Southgate.

Another South African, Dean Burmester, is on four under alongside another Englishman, James Morrison, and American duo John Catlin and Sihwan Kim.
