Wentworth - Ernie Els apologised on Sunday for his foul-mouthed criticism of the watering of the course here at Wentworth during the PGA Championship.

South African Els, who has been involved in the redesign of the layout of the West Course, launched a fierce attack on staff here following his third round on Saturday.

But the three-time major winner has back-tracked and made a donation to the European Tour charity.

George O'Grady, chief executive of the European Tour, said in a statement issued on Sunday: "Ernie Els asked to see me this morning and apologised for his intemperate language following the conclusion of his round yesterday.

"He stated that he had already apologised to the individuals concerned and offered a substantial donation to the European Tour Benevolent Trust, which I accepted. The European Tour now consider this matter closed."

Els had shot a 70 in tricky conditions in his third round but rounded on the state of the course which he considered had been left too dry in hot and windy weather to make it fair to the players.

What a little cry-baby girl he is. Always an excuse, never his fault. Turn off the lights Ernie, the party is over.

@kayley.segal What a stupid comment, read the article again you idiot troll!

"his foul-mouthed criticism of the watering of the course here at Wentworth during the PGA Championship." Maybe YOU should read it again, moron. He was whining because of dry greens. He apologised for his language, not his criticism. Was he playing on a different course than the guy that won? No. He once claimed this same course was poorly designed.. so they let him redesign it. Then the next year he claimed the pin placements were "unfair". Whaaaaaaaaa. He should have blamed his knee. He hasn't used that excuse for a while.

@kayley.segal You're obviously to stupid to try and explain to, so I'm going to ignore you!

At least he manned up! He apologised to those concerned, made a donation (ie he fined himself) and he moved on. How many of us have mouthed off before thinking? How many have failed to apologise? We all act out of character from time to time... this really is a non-event on a slow news day!
