Cape Town - Ernie Els has confirmed that he will tee it up in December’s Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek in Mpumalanga, which will be his only appearance on the Sunshine Tour this summer.

Els this week confirmed his place in the €1 million tournament from December 10-13, which is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the European Tour.

Els will be joined in the field by Ryder Cup star and nine-time European Tour champion Thomas Bjorn, who will make his first appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek, fellow Ryder Cup players Paul McGinley and David Howell, and defending champion Richard Sterne.

After missing the tournament last year, Els returns to a Championship where he boasts an impressive record of one win and three top-10s in the last five years.

Els finished the current season on the European Tour in 11th place on the money list, including top-10s in the Open Championship at Turnberry and the PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

He came close to a victory this year when he was beaten by a single stroke by Phil Mickelson in the WGC–HSBC Champions in China, and finished tied second in The Barclays on the PGA Tour.

With Els in the field, the Championship welcomes back five former champions at Leopard Creek, also including Sterne (2008 champion), South African Charl Schwartzel (2005 champion), Spain’s Alvaro Quiros (2006 champion) and Englishman John Bickerton (2007 champion).

The Alfred Dunhill Championship will also make South African golf history when it tees off the European Tour’s 2010 Race to Dubai on South Africa’s top-ranked golf course.

What happened to Els resting in December after a long year? No Nedbank challenge, but can plat a week later?

Is this where Ernie is now? He can't crack it overseas, so he's done a full circle and come back to where it all started..The Sunshine Tour! Such a pity he's finished....Next stop ERPM

He is still 11th on the European money list and earning big bucks. I guess a bit more than Dale. Not what I would call finished.

I am still an Ernie fan. He may not win as many times as Tiger but he certainly has much better manners and really is an all round nice guy. He has been carrying a heavy load over the past years so give him a break. It may just be that life starts at fourty - Go Ernie!!!

Go Els you good thing. Things are starting to look up for him. Support you all the way!

I think Ernie's main reason for entering this tournament is his long-standing friendship with the Rupert family who actually own the golf course. But its always a pleasure seeing him back home. Regardless what the future holds in-store for him, I'll always be a huge fan!
