WPCA leaders hail appointment of Williams as CSA vice-president

Cape Town - Western Province Cricket Association and Western Cape Cricket leaders have hailed the appointment of Beresford Williams, president of the Western Province Cricket Association, as new vice-president of Cricket South Africa.

“I have worked closely in association with Beresford for the past ten years during which time he has served as president of Western Province for part of that time and in various other administrative positions. He is an enormously energetic administrator and his loyalty and passion has no bounds. He is steeped in cricket and fully committed to the growth and transformation of cricket,” said Nabeal Dien, WPCA CEO.

“I have always believed him to be a humble servant of the people as well as of the game. I am confident he will serve the game and forward the concept of non-racialism, something we are both passionate about,” he added.

“He is a true people’s president at Western Province and his experience, administrative knowledge and commitment to cricket will be beneficial to CSA in the years to come.”

“Beresford is grounded in grassroots and community cricket and work in general. There are few sports leaders seen on the ground in his active way of many years,” said Professor André Odendaal, former CEO of WPCA and acclaimed cricket historian.

“His biggest strengths at CSA level will be helping the organisation to negotiate the tricky path between implementing real transformation at all levels and succeeding in the modern world of commercialised sport. A personable grounded administrator. holding a high position in the City of Cape Town, he must also be a good sounding board for younger administrators and help the newer generation of cricket leaders that is emerging to come through empowered,” added Professor Odendaal.

“Beresford’s more than 30 years in serving club and provincial cricket administration has been justifiably rewarded with his new appointment as vice-president of CSA,” said Angelo Carolissen, vice-chairman of Western Cape Cricket.

“In Western Cape Cricket, he has led from the front and settled heated debates in the boardroom with calmness,” Carolissen added.

“Beresford is a true driver of transformation in cricket and at all times concerned about the development of the youth. Transformation is a non-negotiable for Beresford. He has a firm stance on gender equality and equal opportunity for all! He wants to see more women serving on our boards and in senior cricket positions,” said Carolissen.

“His experience and commitment to serve his country will be valuable in the leadership of CSA,” concluded Carolissen.
