WATCH: Steve Smith in controversial new Vodafone advert

Cape Town - Disgraced former Australian captain Steve Smith has featured in a new advert for Vodafone Australia.

The campaign uses the slogan 'Gutsy is Calling' and features footage of Smith playing club cricket and speaking to a group of children about what he went through during this year's infamous ball-tampering scandal that unfolded during the Newlands Test against the Proteas.

Smith and David Warner were banned from all cricket for a year each, but Vodafone have taken the controversial stance of backing the 29-year-old.

"It was just about being up front and honest and taking responsibility," Smith says in the advert.

"I've certainly had some difficult days, but it's okay to be vulnerable.'

"Everyone makes mistakes, but it's about the way you respond to it that is important.

"I want to come back better than I was."
