WATCH: Aussie Big Bash 'bat flip' gone wrong

Cape Town - The 'bat flip' in the 2019 Big Bash has been an interesting innovation, but it went a little wayward on Tuesday.

In the match between the Melbourne Renegades and the Sydney Thunder, the woman who was tasked with performing the replacement for the 'coin toss', got it all a bit wrong.

While the woman's identity remains unconfirmed at this stage, social media exploded after she launched the bat towards the television cameras in comical fashion.

The facial expressions of all involved were priceless, while a "Gee Whiz!" can be heard from the commentator.

The bat flip has come in for some strong criticism in the Big Bash this year, with many believing the tournament should revert to the more traditional coin toss next year.

As it turns out, the Thunder won the toss and elected to bowl first.
