Cape Town - When Vernon Philander was not named in the Cape Cobras side currently doing battle against the Highveld Lions in Paarl, there would have been some concerned Proteas fans.
Philander has only just returned to full fitness following a lengthy lay-off with an ankle injury.
He was in superb form on his return last week where he scored a century and picked up three wickets in his side's win over the Dolphins.
The good news is that Philander's absence in Paarl has nothing to do with injury.
Instead, he and his wife Mandy are expecting their first child to be born this week.
That much was confirmed by Cobras captain Dane Piedt, who revealed that Philander's place in the squad had been taken by Jason Smith.
Philander is expected to take part in the first ever Mzansi Super League (MSL) later this month where he will play for the Durban Heat.
