SA Under-19 embarrassed by neighbours Namibia

Cape Town - Defending champions South Africa have crashed out of the main tournament of ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh after a shock two wicket loss to Namibia. 

After losing the their opening encounter to Bangladesh, South Africa needed to win to remain in the competition.

Batting first, South Africa were in early trouble losing openers Liam Smith and Rivaldo Moonsamy within the first two overs to be left reeling at 2 for 2.

Wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne and Dean Foxcroft steadied the ship, advancing the score to 35 before they both fell in the space of four balls.

They were soon followed by Wandile Makwetu and Dayyaan Galiem leaving South Africa in serious trouble on 37/6 and Namibia well on top.

South Africa somehow managed to see out their 50 overs thanks to captain Tony de Zorzi (18), Willem Ludick (42) and Lutho Sipamla (17) .

They ended on 139 for 9.

Michael van Lingen was the standout bowler for Namibia, taking 4 for 24 in his allotted 10 overs. 

Namibia were soon in trouble in their reply, losing both openers with only 10 runs on the board.

South Africa continued to chip away with wickets through the middle overs and with Namibia at 75/5 in the in the 24th over, it was still anyone's game. 

A crucial 52 run partnership between Lohan Lourens (58*) and Charl Brits (27) sealed the game for Namibia and although South Africa secured further consolation wickets, the winnings runs came up in the 40th over.

Ziyaad Abrahams was the pick of the South African bowlers with 2/18 in 8.4 overs. 

The defending champions now play Scotland on Tuesday and will remain in Bangladesh to compete in the Plate Championship for teams who did not qualify for the knockout stages of the main event.
